Heart disease treatment has stepped up with the new technology that allows cardiologists a 3-D view of their patients’ coronary arteries, a journal revealed.
While in its early stages of testing, the technology shows promise as it allows doctors swifter and more accurate examinations of heart arteries, including their length, branching pattern and angles, says study investigator John Carroll.
The feasibility study, published in an American Heart Association journal called Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, showed that the new software could lessen the patients’ need for two-dimensional X-ray images that increase their exposure to radiation.
The technology likewise reduces the time cardiologists need to study the images, the study authors explained.
Carroll stated, “This is the first in-human use. The next step is to test it in multiple centers around the world. In addition, we’ll formally test it to see the impact on clinical care.”
